Today marks the release of Bernie Tormé’s awesome new double album “Flowers and Dirt” and I’m delighted to been able to help in a small way on the road to Bernie’s renaissance that led to this development. Bernie’s example teaches us valuable lessons about business, marketing and engagement. Firstly, let’s hear the man himself explaining the project:

You may have heard the phrase “If you want something done properly, do it yourself” It is incorrect in many circumstances, since a committed expert will always do a better job than a lazy novice. But in the case of my friend Bernie the cliché is absolutely true … The music industry has lots of people with good intentions but poor timing and competence when it comes to the murky world of marketing and promotion. So Bernie decided to adopt a DIY approach to support his new album release and tour. He crowdfunded the project via Pledge Music to engage people and was funded to 418% of his target.

Bernie’s tour takes off on October 15 and the double album “Flowers and Dirt” is available today on Bandcamp and all the usual platforms. If, like me, you want the money to end up with the artist rather than a bunch of middle men, buy it on Bandcamp.

Business and Music Lessons

  1. Whilst conventional wisdom suggests that leadership and management is all about delegation, in the music industry, there is an argument for a DIY approach if you cannot get hold of great people to manage your enterprise.
  2. The DIY approach cuts out all the thieving by major platforms such as Amazon and iTunes, though a plethora of middle men, and connects the artist to their fans direct. It’s what consultants call “disintermediation” but what I call common sense.
  3. Look in other places to find other people who are committed to help you. In Bernie’s case, he harnessed the power of the crowd and a little help from his friends.
  4. Seek advice from experts, but consider your own circumstances too and decide to do what’s right for you. A best-fit approach is always better than “template” business advice.

Bernie was extremely kind in giving me some credit for helping to kick start his thinking re marketing and I ended up with a credit for this “accidental coaching”, alongside Arthur Brown, the man behind the 1960’s hit phenomenon “Fire”. Causing a Commotion … for Charity

Big thanks to Dr Andrew Sentance for inviting me to step in as a guest with his classic rock band “Revelation” at a Charity event in Essex the other week. I donned my spray tan, had a tattoo and a few piercings done and headed off to the party, which, to my surprise was nothing like “The Only Way Is Essex”. In fact we helped to raise £2000 for St Lukes’ Hospice which was an incredible amount for an evening like this.  Pre-order your copy of the song I wrote for Prince in support of a Children’s Hospice at Amazon.

We were unable to practice before the event but Andrew’s band Revelation are very flexible and we quickly established some ways of sending each other messages to help us gel as a band. Andrew commented himself on this point:

“The business lesson here is that when the team is well-aligned and each individual knows what they are doing, an awful lot can be achieved without too much team preparation and rehearsal. Spontaneity and good performance can coexist when people are focused on the same end goal and are capable and proficient in their own sphere. If the team turn up all individually unprepared and with very different objectives, it is a recipe for disaster in music and business!”

The band’s diet of music would perhaps not be my first choice of material as they do hits ranging from The Shadows, Chuck Berry through to Dire Straits and The Doobie Brothers. They are great songs but I have simply been overexposed to the standards like “Sultans of Swing”, “Apache”, “Alright Now” and “Long Train Running” at open mic jam sessions!!!  That may tell you more about me than the brilliance of these songs. However, I had a revelation at the charity gig as this gave me something new perform around and the experience was all the more enjoyable for that, even if I had to play some of the solos backwards ….

Another of my musical collaborations with Andrew is the RockintheCity band which also includes the drummer from Revelation Pete Stephens. We plan to do some Charity events in the City of London.  Andrew and I have been invited to appear on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Business Breakfast programme to talk about the RockintheCity concept.  Further to this we and are looking for event sponsors for the Charity events.  Our next warm up gig is a private party in August.  Take a look at Andrew’s Blog for some more details of our exploits.

Time for a mini update on the band that I’ve formed with Dr Andrew Sentance, former Monetary Policy Committee Member for The Bank of England.  Following the press announcements in the Evening Standard and City AM, we’ve attracted a motley crew of City based rockers and are set to organise a Rock meets Business event at a City location for charity.  The band is called RockInTheCity and the gig’s to be “In The City, By The City, For The City”.

The core band members are:

  • Haydn Jones – Telecoms, Operational effectiveness, Bass
  • Dr Andrew Sentance – Senior Economic Adviser, PwC, Guitar, Vocals, Keyboards
  • Bilal Mustafa – Mergers, acquisitions, keyboards, electronica
  • Pete Stephens – Government, drums
  • Barry Monk – Marketing consultant, lead guitar, vocals
  • and myself on lead guitar and vocals

I was reflecting upon my own motivators the other day when a client said to me “You’ve never had a care in the world.  For you, work is play”

Whilst I accepted this casual remark in the manner in which she intended it, as a piece of praise, the person in question obviously did not know just how much I care about my work and the painstaking design activity that sits behind what I do, so that it all looks easy on the day. But, indeed she was right.  We often do our best when there is a happy marriage between our own talents and what our job requires of us. When people have asked me “what is my secret to personal motivation”, I point out that I have simply brought what I love doing into close proximity with what my customers want and need, always ensuring that their needs come before my wants.  It’s what Wham were talking about when they came up with their ‘Choose Life’ T-Shirt:

That said, there are moments in my work when I do realise just how lucky I am .  One such moment occurred the other week after I had delivered an evening keynote address in innovation for a company and we had completed some team building activities with music after dinner.  Around 10.30 pm I realised that all was well and, just for a moment, I felt I could relax  and observe the scene.  I was playing “Paranoid” by Black Sabbath with Bernie Tormé, guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne, Ian Gillan, GMT et al, and was getting paid for it.  “How lucky am I”, I thought to myself.  Better still Bernie was kind enough to complement me on my playing when I drove him home later. Proof positive that praise and authentic feedback are huge “Herzberg motivators”.

Demelza Hospice - a worthy cause that rocks

Demelza Hospice for Children – a worthy cause that rocks

In a brief break from business, I’d like to mention an important charity event I’m compering and performing at coming up on November 02 in Kent. The event is for Demelza House Hospice – a charity that provides hospice care for children.  The evening features:

  • Live music from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s through till the naughties. I’m working with “Masterclass” a superb functions band, who take requests and jam as well as working to a repertoire.
  • “Unleash your inner rock star” – slots available for members of audience to perform with the band – whether you sing, play guitar, bass, drums or just play the triangle.
  • Air guitar competitions – release your inner rock star without concern for your ability to play an instrument etc.
  • Raffle with superb prizes, tattooing, rock makeovers, disco etc.  As well as giving our time for free we are donating some items to the raffle.

All the small things

Arriving at BBC Radio 4 for ‘You and Yours’

Tuesday is a red-letter day for me.  After many months of planning, we deliver the “Monsters of Rock’n’Roll Business” event featuring Bernie Tormé, for a large group of business managers at the Dartford Hilton Hotel.  The event is being recorded for broadcast by BBC Radio 4’s You and Yours programme, Bloomberg TV, The Independent, BBC TV, The Brazillian Financial Times and many more.  People keep asking me how I managed to achieve such levels of publicity. Others seem to think I have a major PR agency working for me.  This is not true, and the back story of this may be summarised as a lot of hard work … and a little bit of luck.  It all comes down to ‘the small things’.  Let’s hear Blink 182’s take on all the small things:

Our story has important lessons for all those who have to deal with the media as part of their business.

I had sent a press release out to various places for the event.  The story got picked up by The Independent newspaper last Thursday.  The journalist rewrote the press release to read as follows:

Cook will be joined by Bernie Tormé, former lead guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne, and Ian Gillan, the Deep Purple singer.

It’s perfectly accurate, but do you see what has happened here?

  • I will indeed be joined by Bernie Tormé.  Fact.
  • Tormé was indeed guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne.  Fact.
  • Tormé was also guitarist for Ian Gillan.  Fact.
  • Ian Gillan was the singer of the legendary hard rock group Deep Purple.  Fact.
  • Ian Gillan will not be, and was never due to be, at the event.

The BBC’s editorial team picked up on the story but missed the all-important comma.  By Friday morning, BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme ran a story that more or less suggested I was responsible for reforming Black Sabbath and Deep Purple – An awe inspiring thought but sadly untrue!  By Saturday evening, The Sunday Express and New Musical Express had copied the mistake and amplified our event into a ‘tour’ through the strategic addition of the letter ‘s’ to the word seminar ! 😦 Despite copious efforts to correct the story online, the mistake was repeated on BBC 6 Music’s Radcliffe and Maconie show on Monday.  At the time of writing, the story has reached USA Today, The Times of India, Planet Rock Radio and Gibson Guitars.

USA Today copied the mistake and suggested that Ozzy and Gillan were joining a business consultancy – ha ha

You might say that all publicity is good publicity?  In this case, I had to spend considerable time and energy correcting online media and apologising to Ian Gillan’s management.  Rock’n’Roll HR can be cruel and I’m pleased to say that I still have all my body parts after this process!  I also had to spend quite a bit of time dealing with old rockers and rock chicks, who wrote e-mails to confer God-like status on me, for forging a reunion between Ian Gillan and Bernie Tormé.   Having  pulled this trick off, some of them even expect me to resurrect Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse!

The Belfast Telegraph picked up the story and decided to replace Bernie’s picture with Elton John !  I have not yet decided to get a piano in for the event …

What then are the lessons for people who deal with PR and external affairs?

  1. If possible, get national media journalists to send a proof of anything they release.  Of course they don’t like doing this, but it helps to avoid this kind of PR disaster.
  2. Act fast to correct errors.  I stopped the Sunday Express print run by contacting the paper at midnight on Saturday, but the ‘runaway online media train’ had already ‘left the station’ re online copies of the article.
  3. Commas cost me a few apologies to some class A rock stars, but the consequences could be more serious for your business.  In the warped words of Blink 182, All the small things count.
Postscript:  The event was filmed by Bloomberg TV, BBC One News.  BBC Radio 4 also made a programme for their You and Yours Programme.  Woohoo !
